Fire Protection is not simple. There are multiple facets involved.
SCO Fire & Life Safety has been providing fire protection services since 1990
Always putting people 1st is the core value we follow. Becoming a client of SCO is an agreement with the understanding that when anything is inspected or tested the results must be taken into account. If anything is found defective or non compliant it must be corrected. Law in Ontario is clear what must be tested or inspected and at what intervals. We take pride in our inspections and create a complete report as per the standards of the NFPA and the Ontario fire and building codes. there is no "Grand Father Clause when it come to fire protection. Full reports are a must when it comes to testing and inspections. Complete details help us to serve you better and also gives you the proper paper work to provide the Fire Prevention Offices of your City and for your insurance company should they require it. Records are important because they can give us the tools to project future maintenance and or replacement or retrofit of parts, components, equipment etc... Records also prove your compliance with the standards in Ontario.
Most don't realize that almost all your life safety equipment requires inspection and or testing. Fire alarms, Sprinklers, Fire suppression systems, Fire extinguishers, Fire hose's, Emergency lighting, Door closers, fire stops and many more things are required under Ontario Law. If something applies to your building it must be addressed as per the standards.
Don't assume your systems are 100% operational. This is dangerous and is the reason for the standards in Ontario.
Building and business owners are 100% responsible for the over all fitness of the life and fire safety systems but employees and tenants are also vital to the over all fire safety planning. The larger the facility the more the people must get involved with the Fire Safety Plan. Owners and Management must implement fire safety plans but with out proper co operation from resident or staff the pan will quickly fall apart. There is no substitute for fire drills or training when it comes to a fire safety plan. Staff must also be trained on the use of a Fire extinguisher, they must know how to identify the type or "class" of fire and where the fire extinguishers are located in their work space and know that evacuation is ALWAYS the first course of action. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher is for their protection or the protection of others
and should only be used if they have 1. called 911 and reported the fire to emergency services. 2. have activated the fire alarm system if any or YELL FIRE FIRE to alert other of the fire situation so the evacuation can commence and 3. they are close to an exit and can evacuate safely after use of the fire extinguisher. If you haven't been trained you must evacuate.
What is A Fire Safety plan? Fire Planning is part of the overall fire protection and applies to most occupancies in Ontario. Without an approved fire safety plan your fire protection is not complete. A Fire Safety plan for commercial properties must be site specific. There are many cookie cutter plans that will not provide you with the best over all evacuation of the building in the event of a fire. As an example in many residential buildings the fire plan has a residents hand out indicating the duties of the persons living in the dwelling. Residents are 100% responsible for their smoke alarms in their suite. Most think it not required to test them monthly. This is not true. Your landlord must replace batteries or the a smoke detector when it is brought to their attention. If the resident does not test it how can they know? A fire plan residents hand out states this and put the onus on the persons residing in the suite. Further the plan advises the proper way to evacuate the building. Do not use elevators, take the stairs , bring your keys etc... Together Building management and residents can make it possible for the timely and safe evacuation of a building
Staff of any business must be trained for specific duties involved in a fire safety plan. Fire Wardens play a role in the over all planning. Sections of a business or staff on multiple floors need one person if not more to take attendance and encourage the evacuation of people from the building, they must help in the evacuation of person requiring assistance. Once the evacuation of people is complete the attendance helps to confirm all your people are out safely. Training and implementation of a fire plan are vital to its success. SCO has been writing and assisting in the implementation of Fire Safety Plans for more than 30 years. your fire plan will be ever changing as new equipment is introduced for fire safety or if staffing levels change ect ... Occupational Health and Safety requires that business's follow the codes and allow employees to have a voice in the overall fire safety plans. With out their support a plan could quickly fail. By interviewing and getting to know your OHS staff we can help with specifics of any building. These staff members will also be part of the inspections required on weekly and monthly basis. Together Management and employees can create the best possible plan for your business,
For those who live in their own homes a fire safety plan is vital to have. It allows you to know your exits and alternatives if a fire breaks out in your home. All Fire Services in all cities have a simple template to make your own and you are encouraged to seek these out and use them. Smoke alarms in your home are vital to your early warning in case of a fire. If you don't have working Smoke Alarms then you don't stand a chance. Practicing your evacuation plan monthly will help ensure you a speedy and safe escape in case of fire. What should I do if my children are infants, my cats? my dog there are many things that can be planned out ahead of time and implemented for your home. if you have children they are already being trained in school on how to evacuate in case of a fire alarm, so use this to keep them involved at their own home. teach them where to go and wait for you if they leave the home first. Test your smoke alarm via the test button and make sure your children know the sound it makes so they know to escape and go to the meeting place. Things can be replaced but people can not.
